Fixed wireless

Our tower network is built for the farms, acreages, and lake lots past where wired providers stop, with speeds that handle a busy household and installation by our own crews.

MCSnet builds fiber, GigAir, and fixed wireless across rural Alberta, and the network keeps growing. See where fiber is headed next.

Fort Assiniboine sits about 39 kilometres from the County of Barrhead, part of the same MCSnet network reaching the region. See every speed and price on the plans page, follow MCSnet’s fiber projects, or explore the wider rural Alberta network.

It is a full house of phones, TVs, laptops, and cameras all running at once without anyone shouting to get off the internet.

MCSnet is built to carry all of it. Check what reaches your address and we will show you the speeds available where you live, then help you match them to how your household actually uses the internet.

A Fur Trade Crossing on the Athabasca

Fort Assiniboine sits on the north shore of the Athabasca River at the junction of Highways 33 and 661 in Woodlands County, home to 158 people at the 2021 Census, about 39 kilometres northwest of Barrhead, 62 kilometres southeast of Swan Hills, and 91 kilometres northeast of Whitecourt. The Hudson’s Bay Company opened a post here in 1824, known as Athabaska River House, following the HBC’s 1821 merger with the North West Company, and the site served as a transportation hub and provisioning centre for decades. When the Klondike Trail was cut through the Swan Hills in 1898, Fort Assiniboine became a stopping point again, with gold seekers crossing the river here on their way north.

Homesteads appeared from 1906, the community incorporated as a village in 1958, and it reverted to hamlet status at the end of 1991.

Landmarks, Schools, and a Growing Network

The Fort Assiniboine Museum, a replica of the original fort built in 1980, keeps that fur trade history close to home, alongside the world’s largest wagon wheel and pickaxe monument, standing 7.3 metres tall. Fort Assiniboine School teaches kindergarten through grade 9, with high schoolers moving on to Barrhead Composite High School. The hamlet still has its own post office, public library, general store, motel, and gas station, and forestry, oil and gas services, and agriculture drive the surrounding Woodlands County economy.

MCSnet’s wireless network here is expanding along with the community, with new tower construction bringing coverage to more homes and farms in the area.
