Dependable internet is not a luxury anymore. It is family movie night streaming without the spinning wheel, the kids gaming with friends two provinces over, a video call to a child working away, and a rural business reaching customers anywhere. It is a full house of phones, TVs, laptops, and cameras all running at once without anyone shouting to get off the internet.
MCSnet is built to carry all of it. Check what reaches your address and we will show you the speeds available where you live, then help you match them to how your household actually uses the internet.
Tofield has been a town since 1909, named for Dr. J.H. Tofield, a pioneer doctor who arrived from England in 1893. Sitting at the junction of Highways 14, 834, and 626, about 68 kilometres east of Edmonton, the town of 2,045 people is best known for what lies just northeast of it: Beaverhill Lake, a designated Important Bird Area and historically one of the best shorebird and waterfowl migration sites in North America.
MCSnet’s fixed wireless network reaches Tofield and the farms around the lake, so whether you are streaming, running a business, or just keeping in touch, the connection holds up.
Just outside town on Beaverhill Lake’s south shore sits the Beaverhill Bird Observatory, Canada’s second-oldest migration monitoring station, established in 1984. In 2021, the observatory put up a communication tower to host an MCSnet Wi-Fi receiver dish, and MCSnet has provided the connection free of charge every month since, through our Community Connections program.
As the observatory put it: “With Wi-Fi our staff can communicate with each other, the BBO board, and most importantly the public who visit us.” That connection now supports Zoom meetings, webinars, live podcasts, emergency communications, and research staff access to critical information at one of the remotest sites in the county. Read more about the partnership.
Tofield keeps busy: the four-sheet Tofield Curling Rink runs October through March out at the fairgrounds, the indoor arena hosts hockey through the winter, and the Tofield Agricultural Society’s Western Days brings a rodeo and cabaret to town every summer. Kids move through C.W. Sears School, Tofield School, and Northstar Outreach School, all part of Battle River School Division.
MCSnet Wi-Fi is already available for curlers and spectators at the rink, a small sign of how much this network is woven into daily life here.
MCSnet provides free public Wi-Fi at the places where Tofield gathers: the Tofield Curling Club, the Community Hall, the Ag Society, the Nature Centre and Museum, the Golden Club, the Tofield-Ryley and Area Food Bank, and House Ministries. It is part of how we give back to the communities we connect, and you can see the full list on our hotspot partnerships page.
“Great internet service provided for rural users. We have been with MCSnet for over a decade and have absolutely no reason to change. From getting an actual live local person on the phone when you call for support, to friendly and professional technicians, MCSnet is a great value for the service received.”
