Plamondon was founded on July 28, 1908, when Joseph Plamondon and his family arrived from Michigan along with the Duperron, St. John, Belanger, Harpe, and Gauthier families, most of them French-Canadian and French-American settlers from Provemont, Michigan and French-speaking Ontario. That heritage stuck: Plamondon is one of only four officially recognized bilingual, English and French, communities in Alberta, and École Plamondon School still teaches in English, French immersion, and Russian, reflecting the Russian Orthodox Old Believers community that settled here in the mid-1970s after relocating from Woodburn, Oregon.
The Fête de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste, honouring the patron saint of French Canadians, brings out nail hammering, log sawing, and wool spinning competitions, and Plamondon regularly kicks off Alberta Francophonie Month events for the whole region.
Plamondon runs two hotels, two banks, a post office, an indoor hockey arena with artificial ice that hosts the annual Hockey en Fête tournament, the Plamondon Museum’s pioneer and Metis history exhibits, and Mini Parc Heritage Park’s miniature homestead replicas. Farming and logging remain the area’s main industries, and Plamondon Whitesands Resort on the west shore of Lac La Biche Lake adds seasonal lake lots, cabins, a sandy beach, and a boat launch to the mix.
