Wainwright earned its “Buffalo Capital of Canada” nickname from Buffalo National Park, established here in 1909 and home to thousands of bison before the park closed in 1940 and the land became CFB Wainwright. A dozen or so bison still live on the base today. In town, the Wainwright Memorial Clock Tower is the only structure left standing after the fire that swept through Main Street in 1929, dedicated in 1925 as a First World War memorial.
