What a Good Connection Actually Gets You

Dependable internet is not a luxury anymore. It is family movie night streaming without the spinning wheel, the kids gaming with friends two provinces over, a video call to a child working away, and a rural business reaching customers anywhere. It is a full house of phones, TVs, laptops, and cameras all running at once without anyone shouting to get off the internet.

MCSnet is built to carry all of it. Check what reaches your address and we will show you the speeds available where you live, then help you match them to how your household actually uses the internet.

Western Canada’s First Italian Colony

Hylo began in 1914 as a station on the Alberta and Great Waterways railway line, popularly said to be named after a card game the crew played, high-low. That same year, with help from the Italian Society of Edmonton, an agricultural colony of Italian settlers left Edmonton on July 27, 1914, led by consular representative Felice De Angelis, and put down roots across what became the Hylo and Venice settlements, the first Italian colony in Western Canada. Neighbouring Venice, named a couple of years later, still holds its annual Venice Picnic at Holy Redeemer Church, built in 1924, a tradition running since 1927.

Hylo’s own recorded population was just 31 people in the county’s 2016 municipal census, one of the smallest hamlets in Lac La Biche County. Small does not mean forgotten: the fiber build funded in 2024 runs right through here.

A Fiber Corridor Coming Through

In 2024, MCSnet received matching provincial and federal grant funding to build 55.83 kilometres of new fiber serving Skeleton Lake, Caslan, Hylo, and areas east, connecting directly into our existing fixed-wireless towers. That means Hylo is not on the sidelines of MCSnet’s fiber expansion, it is one of the named communities on the route.
