Dependable internet is not a luxury anymore. It is family movie night streaming without the spinning wheel, the kids gaming with friends two provinces over, a video call to a child working away, and a rural business reaching customers anywhere. It is a full house of phones, TVs, laptops, and cameras all running at once without anyone shouting to get off the internet.
MCSnet is built to carry all of it. Check what reaches your address and we will show you the speeds available where you live, then help you match them to how your household actually uses the internet.
Settlement here began around 1903 under the name Pleasant Ridge. The community was renamed Holden in 1906 to honour James Holden, an early Alberta MLA, and when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway arrived in 1909, Holden incorporated as a village that same year. Today it is a village of 338 people on Highway 14, south of Vegreville, sitting along the CN Railway mainline, with creeks nearby forming the head of the Vermilion River.
MCSnet’s fixed wireless network reaches Holden and the farms around it, keeping a village built on a century of small-town continuity connected to everything the internet is used for today.
Holden’s flat prairie terrain and black, class-2-fertility soil support wheat, barley, oats, canola, and canary seed, with cattle ranching a significant part of the local economy too. The area gets 100 to 120 frost-free days and around 2,180 to 2,200 hours of sunshine a year, the kind of growing conditions that built this village and keep the farms around it running.
Holden keeps a museum and a theatre of its own, along with a cenotaph honouring the community’s veterans. It also serves as a library hub for the area: the community hall in the nearby hamlet of Bruce houses a satellite library branch that is run out of Holden, keeping books moving between the two communities.
Council here is small by design, five elected councillors and a mayor chosen annually each October, running a village that employs three full-time staff and still manages to punch above its size.
MCSnet provides free public Wi-Fi at the places where Holden gathers: The Gallery, Holden’s event, arts, recreation and tourism hub. It is part of how we give back to the communities we connect, and you can see the full list on our hotspot partnerships page.
