Fishing Lake, known in Cree as Packechawanis, sits within the Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87, about 15 kilometres east of Highway 897 and 52 kilometres south of Cold Lake. It shares a border with Elizabeth Métis Settlement, and its community hub, Sputinow, is home to the settlement’s administration office. As of the 2021 Census, Fishing Lake’s population was 551.
Fishing Lake is governed by an elected Settlement Council of five members, one of the eight Métis Settlements in Alberta under the Metis Settlements Act, together the only legislated Métis land base in Canada. Community facilities include Riel Beach on Frog Lake for fishing and boating, a skate park, a spray park, ball and hockey facilities, a golf course, and trail networks for skiing, snowmobiling, and ATVs.
Fishing Lake holds an annual rodeo, and the settlement’s economy includes farming, oil and gas, timber cutting, hunting, fishing, and a mix of home-based and administration-related businesses.
