Elizabeth, welcomed on its own website with the Cree greeting “tawow,” sits within the Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87, about 36 kilometres south of Cold Lake and 46 kilometres east of Bonnyville, roughly a half-hour drive from Cold Lake. It shares its southern border with Fishing Lake Métis Settlement and neighbours Beaverdam, Cold Lake First Nations, Frog Lake, and Kehewin. The settlement covers 25,641 hectares, and as of the 2021 Census, its population was 594.
Elizabeth is governed by an elected Settlement Council of five members, one of the eight Métis Settlements in Alberta under the Metis Settlements Act, together the only legislated Métis land base in Canada. Community facilities include the Elizabeth Administration Office, the Elizabeth Métis Settlement Hall, the Elizabeth Community Hall, a Roman Catholic church, a school, a daycare, a fire hall, a water treatment plant, baseball diamonds, and rodeo grounds. Health care is provided through a nurse’s office in the community hall, with the nearest hospital in Cold Lake.
Members work in oil and gas, forestry, and construction, and the settlement has natural gas, electrical power, telephone, and internet service in place alongside these industries.
