About Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement

Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement was established as a local government corporation in 1990 under the Metis Settlements Act, though the Settlement’s own history traces its first settlers back to 1951. It sits along Highway 855, roughly 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton and about 50 kilometres southwest of Lac La Biche, and covers about 35,356 hectares.

Buffalo Lake is one of only eight Métis Settlements in Alberta, alongside East Prairie, Elizabeth, Fishing Lake, Gift Lake, Kikino, Paddle Prairie, and Peavine. Together they make up what the Metis Settlements General Council describes as the first and only Métis self-government in Canada, recognized constitutionally as a distinct and protected people, spanning roughly 1.25 million acres. Buffalo Lake is governed by an elected Settlement Council of five members and its own administrative staff.

Community Life at Buffalo Lake

Community infrastructure includes a water treatment plant, a fire hall, a fitness facility, a family centre, a training centre, a Head Start early-childhood building, and recreation grounds, with 210 homes built since the Settlement’s founding. The Buffalo Lake Senior’s Society runs a seniors’ centre with regular meetings, dinners, and celebrations for elders, and roughly 25 to 30 home-based businesses operate within the community.

Each year, the Buffalo Lake Cultural Days and Rodeo Event brings professional rodeo, chuck wagon races, a talent show, and slow-pitch tournaments to the nearby North Buck Lake campgrounds.
