Farm Country West of Edmonton

The County of Barrhead No. 11 covers 2,385 square kilometres of farmland, forest, and lake country about 120 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, home to roughly 5,900 people under Reeve Erik Munck. The town of Barrhead anchors the county, with the hamlets of Campsie, Manola, Neerlandia, and Thunder Lake spread across the townships around it, and Lac La Nonne straddling the county’s southern edge.

MCSnet, headquartered in St. Paul, Alberta since 1995, built the wireless network that covers this county today, and in 2022 partnered directly with the County of Barrhead to push fiber deeper into the region.

Fiber Is Moving Through the County

In 2022, MCSnet and the County of Barrhead partnered to build 58 kilometres of transit fiber connecting the Kiel Industrial Park with the hamlets of Neerlandia, Thunder Lake, and Manola, and the area around Lac La Nonne, improving wireless connectivity for approximately 1,000 households across the county.

That transit fiber is the backbone behind our fixed wireless network today, and it is also the foundation for the fiber-to-the-home build now underway at Lac La Nonne and Thunder Lake, part of a federally supported expansion reaching 3,401 rural households across the region, with construction scheduled to complete by March 2027.
