The Lougheed branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is named for Cecil John Kinross, a local soldier who earned the Victoria Cross for a solo assault on a German machine-gun position at the Battle of Passchendaele during the First World War, one of the highest honours a Commonwealth soldier can receive. Kinross moved to Lougheed with his family as a teenager, enlisted from the village, and returned to settle there after the war. The branch took his name following his death.
